In Iceland, as elsewhere, the raw materials available were used in making essential items. Over the centuries, people here have successfully adapted to the unpredictable forces of nature. In a cold climate, clothes are literally a question of life or death. Leather preparation and sewing were also essential survival skills for locals. If your clothes break or tear in the icy cold, you have to be able to repair them. Knowledge of how to make waterproof, breathable garments has existed for a very long time.

Wool and weaving have in many ways been the heart of Icelandic society throughout history. Working with wool was an important part of the lives and culture of the people and a strong tradition for knitting and weaving. It was even punishable by law for selling inadequate woven wool in the viking era, as it was a dominant form of legal currency in Iceland. At a time the country was the largest producer of wadmal (woven wool) in the North Atlantic and it became to be very important to the country´s trade as the main export.

- Wool industry in Iceland
- Hide & skin industry of Iceland

Tíska – hráefni, textíll og hönnun

Á seinni hluta 20. aldar breyttist staða textílhandverks á Íslandi verulega. With increasing mechanisation and mass production, wool and textile work had to redefine its place. The question was no longer only how to preserve tradition, but how knowledge of wool, knitting, weaving, and sewing could become part of contemporary production, design, and a new professional awareness.

During this period, the focus shifted increasingly toward education and structured skill development. Craft knowledge that had once been domestic became formal teaching, courses, and specialised training. This laid the foundation for textile knowledge — an understanding of fibres, texture, durability, and processes — to move into a new context: from the home into design practice and market-oriented production.

In the 1970s and 1980s, this development became closely linked to growing discussions around design and quality. Wool was no longer seen solely as a utilitarian raw material, but also as a medium for form, aesthetics, and identity. The interaction between craftsmanship and industry opened up new approaches, where traditional textile knowledge became part of professional design thinking — a bridge between heritage and the present.

Towards the end of the century and into the 21st, this material awareness gained even greater importance. In a world of rapid consumption and global production, specialised knowledge of wool and natural fibres became increasingly valuable. Textile craftsmanship was no longer a marginal activity, but a foundation for sustainable design, where material, origin, and process matter as much as appearance. In this way, the textile tradition rooted in Icelandic wool and craftsmanship became an integral part of contemporary design and fashion — a living heritage that continues to evolve.

Húsgögn – hönnun, handverk og hráefni

Á miðri 20. öld stóð íslensk húsgagnaframleiðsla í miklum blóma. Small workshops across the country created pieces that can still be found in homes today, reflecting a strong craft tradition, deep material awareness, and a refined sense of form. It was a period when design, craftsmanship, and raw materials worked in close dialogue with the environment and everyday life.

Natural materials played a central role. Icelandic woven wool was used not only in clothing but also as upholstery and coverings in furniture, where its durability and insulating qualities proved highly valuable. Sheepskins and leather were likewise important in seating furniture — on chairs, benches, and other seats — where the softness, warmth, and resilience of the materials enhanced both comfort and the tactile experience of a space. This use of materials helped create warm, inviting interiors in which nature was a tangible presence.

Although imported furniture later reduced domestic production, this tradition continued in smaller workshops and in Icelandic homes. In recent years, Icelandic design has regained momentum, with a new generation of designers and makers building on this heritage. Many contemporary furniture pieces draw inspiration from the same material approach — where nature, craftsmanship, and form come together as a cohesive whole.

Icelandic furniture design is therefore not only a story of form and style, but also of a relationship with materials, their origins, and the knowledge required to shape the resources of nature into objects that endure and age beautifully through use.
